In the last 3 minutes of class, students categorize where they stand and add a word or idea that captures their takeaway. Results appear as color-coded pills — the professor sees the whole class at a glance before anyone leaves.
This technique is grounded in research on spaced retrieval and formative assessment (Ebbinghaus, 1885; Dunlosky et al., 2013): ending a session with active recall significantly improves what students retain 24 hours later, and gives the professor real data on what landed and what didn’t.
How to use it:
- Share the participation link or QR code in the last 3 minutes of class
- Students categorize and add a takeaway word — no account needed
- Project the pill visualization and use it to open the next session
Works for: any class where you want to close the loop — and open the next one knowing exactly where to start.
